AN OVERVIEW OF METHODOLOGIES AND STRATEGIES

Course Description

This course will provide participants with an overview of methodologies and strategies that are currently being implemented in home, school, hospital, and clinic settings to enhance auditory processing, attending skills, responding behaviors, social communicative acts, and speech and language development in children with speech and language challenges attributed to a language delay/disorder, cognitive deficits, apraxia, and/or an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Methodologies such as Fast ForWord, Links to Language, and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) will be highlighted. Techniques such as visual strategies and the principles of sensory integration, which can be combined with specific intervention methodologies, will also be cited.

Course Obiectives

After attending this course, participants will be able to:

1)        Discuss/describe three different methodologies to enhance speech and language development in children diagnosed with speech and language disorders

2)         State the pros and cons of specific methodologies, particularly Links to Language, ABA, and Fast ForWord

3)         Name strategies that can be effectively integrated with specific methodologies to assist children in learning speech and language

4)         Refer to and/or contact resources/professionals/websites to acquire information and/or training in methodologies/strategies
